Art History Afternoon Tea grew out of a simple desire to share—
to share two of the most beautiful ways I spend time: lingering over afternoon tea in easy conversation with friends, and quietly keeping company with art history, through books, images, and thought.

Since my sophomore year, when I first encountered art history in Professor Chu Ching-Hua’s class, I have spent more than two decades immersed in the world of art, never once wishing to step away. Like history itself, art history stretches endlessly across time and geography. My academic training began with the Italian Renaissance in the MA program of Art History and Art Theory at the University of Essex in the UK, yet it was during my doctoral studies in Japan that I discovered the vitality and beauty of Eastern art history.

After working in art magazines, museums, and galleries, I gradually came to understand that art history is not merely a discipline that studies art of the past—it is also a way of seeing the world. Artists and artworks occupy a singular position in our lives: not essential for survival, yet central to culture itself. Through art, in its many forms, we encounter the beauty of life, and the study of art history becomes the doorway through which we learn how to truly look.

I often joke that whenever I travel for pleasure, no matter which way I turn, I somehow always end up in a museum. Artworks—like music or dance—are essential nourishment for the soul. Having spent nearly two-thirds of my life alongside art and art history has been a deeply rich journey. To share this abundance with friends through Art History Afternoon Tea at Gallery de sol feels like the beginning of another generous, and as yet unknown, chapter.

Program Overview|

Each session is limited to eight participants. In the calm light of the afternoon, guests are invited to listen closely as Director Sunny shares the stories from art history that have long nourished her—beyond rigid theories and “-isms,” and within the repetitions and variations of historical narratives.

Here, art history reveals its most approachable and endearing face: a master’s little-known secret, an anecdote from a particular era, or a love story woven through time, place, and circumstance.

Curated afternoon tea and refreshments accompany the conversation, creating a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. Together, we step gradually into the vast, generous treasury of art history, where its diversity, intimacy, and rich storytelling come together to prepare a form of soul food that is indispensable to life.
